Data analysis with jSparc

It is possible to analyse HiSPARC coincidences with jSparc.

A coincidence means that three or more stations observe the same event. Most HiSPARC stations are located at high schools. For an event to occur at a station at least two of its detectors need to observe particles at the same time. In case of a coincidence multiple stations are hit by the same air shower of particles.

The analysis software can be used on a computer (mobile device) connected to the internet.

The software works as follows:

  • Open the jSparc analysis page.
  • Fill in the required information, your name, the session PIN and session title.
  • Click "Get data".

After a couple of seconds the screen should be filled with graphs, a map and data. The graphs show the signals measured by the detectors. the x-axis is time and the y-axis is the strength of the signal (lower is stronger signal). The top graph shows the entire coincidence measured by all stations. Bellow that the graphs for each individual station can be examined.

In the middle the map shows the participating stations and a black spot. This black spot represents the shower core and can be moved around the map.

  • Click and drag the black spot around the map.
  • Look at the data on the right side, the second to last row gives the measured particle density. The last row gives the calculated particle density, with the assumption that the shower core is correctly placed.
  • If the values in the two rows are euqal that indicates that the chosen shower core position might be the actual shower core position.

Underneath the map the energy and the error (according to the chi-squared method) are shown. A smaller error indicates a better estimation of the shower core position.

  • When you are satisfied with your result click the 'Send result' button.
  • A pop-up screen will show you how well you did compared to other people participating in your session.
